As a master herbalist, I get asked all the time: "LaToya, how do I make my home remedies feel as potent and consistent as what I buy from professional apothecaries?" The secret isn't in magic spells; it is in precise math. Today, I'm demystifying menstruum calculations, solvent ratios, and hydration offsets.
When we craft liquid extracts (tinctures), our primary goal is to pull active botanical constituents out of plant tissues and hold them in a stable solution. To do this consistently, we must understand extraction ratios and menstruum strength.
Understanding the Weight-to-Volume Ratio
In modern Western herbalism, extractions are defined by a dry weight-to-volume ratio:
Dry Botanical Extractions (1:5): This means that for every 1 gram of dry plant material, you use 5 milliliters of liquid solvent (menstruum).
Fresh Botanical Extractions (1:2): Since fresh plants contain cellular water, we extract them at a tighter ratio of 1 gram of fresh plant to 2 milliliters of menstruum.
Step-by-Step Menstruum Calculation
Let's assume you want to extract 100 grams of dry dandelion root to support digestive comfort. You choose a standard 1:5 ratio.
1. Calculate Total Menstruum Volume:
Herb Weight (100g) x Ratio Factor (5) = 500mL total volume needed.
2. Determine Your Alcohol Percentage (ABV):
For roots containing dense inulin and water-soluble compounds, we want a menstruum of 60% Alcohol by Volume (ABV) to maintain a perfect balance of alcohol-soluble resins and water-soluble polysaccharides. Let's assume you are starting with 95% ABV neutral grain alcohol (Everclear).
3. Apply the Dilution Formula:
To find out how much of your starting alcohol (V_alcohol) and distilled water (V_water) to mix:
V_alcohol = (Desired % / Starting %) x Total Volume = (60 / 95) x 500mL = 315.8mL of 95% alcohol.
V_water = Total Volume - V_alcohol = 500mL - 315.8mL = 184.2mL of distilled water.
You will combine 315.8mL of 95% grain alcohol with 184.2mL of distilled water to create your custom 500mL menstruum at 60% ABV.
The Hydration Offset for Fresh Herbs
When working with fresh plants, they bring their own water to the extraction process. If you ignore this, your alcohol level will drop too low, causing your extract to spoil or cloud. To offset this, we calculate the moisture weight of the fresh herb and subtract it from the water portion of our menstruum calculation.
