Adaptogens, the HPA Axis, and Circadian Dosing

By LaToya Renee, The Herbalist

In today's fast-paced, high-stimulus environment, maintaining a sense of centered calm can feel like an uphill battle. As an herbalist, I approach stress not by trying to shut it down, but by supporting the body's natural adaptive pathways. Today, we're exploring the intersection of adaptogens, the HPA axis, and circadian dosing.

What is the HPA Axis?

The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis is our body's primary stress response coordinator. When you perceive a stressor, your hypothalamus releases hormones that signal the pituitary gland, which in turn tells your adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline. This cascade is healthy in short bursts. However, chronic activation can leave you feeling drained, restless, and out of balance.

The Role of Adaptogenic Herbs

Adaptogens are unique botanicals that promote equilibrium by supporting the body's stress response. They do not force a response; instead, they assist the body in adjusting its response. Here are my core recommendations:

Stimulating Adaptogens (e.g., Rhodiola, Eleuthero): These herbs help promote physical stamina, mental clarity, and morning alertness.

Calming Adaptogens (e.g., Ashwagandha, Holy Basil): These plants nourish the nervous system, helping to ease evening tension and support natural sleep transitions.

Circadian Dosing: Timing for Vitality

Our cortisol levels follow a circadian rhythm—spiking in the morning to wake us up, and tapering down in the evening to prepare us for sleep. By timing our adaptogens to match these natural curves, we achieve optimal results.

1. Morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM): Take stimulating adaptogens like Rhodiola or ginseng to align with your natural cortisol spike, promoting focused energy.

2. Afternoon (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM): Take building adaptogens like Eleuthero to prevent the mid-day slump without relying on caffeine.

3. Evening (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM): Take calming adaptogens like Ashwagandha or Holy Basil to support the body's natural transition into a restful night.

By working with your biology, you support your natural sleep-wake cycle and overall vitality.

This was incredibly helpful. I tried making the marshmallow root cold infusion last night and the difference in texture and throat comfort is amazing! The extraction process was so simple.

I've been looking for exact calculations for home menstruums everywhere. Timing adaptogens to the HPA axis has completely changed how I plan my day.
