- Description
Mullein is an amazing plant. The flower is well known by many elders and herbalist a liike. Used to make herbal preparations.
Mullein has been used for colds & cough, tuberculosis, bronchitis, hoarseness, pneumonia, earaches, colds, chills, flu, swine flu, fever, allergies, tonsillitis, and sore throat to say the least. But that's only the beginning of the long list reasons mullein has been used. Other uses include Asthma, diarrhea, colic, migraines, joint pain, and even gout. There has even been reports of mullein being used as a diuretic to increase urine output.
Mullein can be used in many forms like tinctures, oils, infusions, salves, poultice, compress, and even as a form of hydrotherapy.
Mullein can be applied to the skin for wounds, burns, hemorrhoids, bruises, frost bite, and skin infections (cellulitis) when used as an oil or salve. The leaves are used topically to soften and protect the skin.
While mullein leaf (Verbascum thapsus, also known as common mullein) has a long history of traditional use, scientific evidence continues to emerge about its potential benefits. Test tube studies and research conducted in the United States show that mullein may possess anti-inflammatory properties and support the health of mucous membranes.
Though generally considered safe, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not evaluated mullein as a treatment for any specific health conditions.
Some people use mullein tea for its potential soothing effects, including as a folk treatment for ear pain. It's important to consult your doctor before using mullein, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you take other medications (like St. John's Wort), as interactions may occur. If any side effects of mullein are experienced, discontinue use and contact your doctor.
